South Florida reached another fraud milestone for what the Justice Department called “the largest combined financial fraud loss for a food stamp trafficking takedown in history.”That dubious new record, federal prosecutors claim, is $20 million and resulted in a dozen charged with doing the government dirty via food stamp fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The 12 charged over four cases are Hasan Saleh, 59, Mohammed Alobaisi, 37, Reynold Francois, 38, Ihab Hassouna, 44, Moham..>> view originalLondon bawling! Inside yet another somber — and angry — Dolphins locker room here in their home away from home, Miami players said the right things. The Dolphins had just been shut out for the first time since 2013 — and the first time in the Adam Gase era — and the swagger of 2016 was a distant memory. The scoreboard outside read Saints 20, Dolphin 0. The gulf between the Dolphins and dominance was wider than the Atlantic. Offense, rightly, took the blame. The defense, rightly, didn’t pile on. And players m..>> view originalWoman who earned praise from Obama after waiting in line for ...
After standing in line for several hours to vote in the 2012 presidential election, Desiline Victor got the surprise of a lifetime. The then-102-year-old from North Miami was invited to sit in the first lady’s box as former President Barack Obama delivered his State of the Union address. “We should follow the example of a North Miami woman named Desiline Victor,” Obama said during his Feb. 12, 2013, speech. “When Desiline arrived at her polling place, she was told to wait to vote, might be six ..>> view originalWas Giancarlo Stanton's curtain call Sunday his final goodbye to ...
It didn’t have the storybook ending he or Marlins fans wanted. Giancarlo Stanton walked off the field after taking one last rip at an 86-mile per hour slider from Arodys Vizcaino and coming up short of home run No. 60. As loud chants of ‘M-V-P’ echoed around Marlins Park, Stanton emerged from the dugout, raised his bat and pounded his chest. Was it the last time Stanton would play in a Marlins uniform? Was it the last time he’d make up one-third of arguably baseball’s best outfield along with ..>> view originalVanuatu island exodus continues even as volcano stabilizes
The evacuation of a Vanuatu island was continuing on Monday even after scientists said an erupting volcano had stabilized.A makeshift fleet of vessels ranging from tiny water taxis to large landing craft was moving thousands of people from Ambae island to nearby islands in the Pacific archipelago.Vanuatu officials last week ordered the complete evacuation of the island's 11,000 residents, fearing the Manaro volcano might blow in a major eruption. But Brad Scott, a New Zealand volcanologist who i..>> view originalMiami Heat continue to lock arms during national anthem
They began with the approach at the start of last season and will continue for another season, the Miami Heat again standing with arms locked during the national anthem before Sunday's exhibition game against the Atlanta Hawks at AmericanAirlines Arena.Unlike most other NBA teams, the Heat stayed with the approach throughout last season, at the time when racial inequality was a theme addressed by many pro sports teams, well in advance of Donald Trump being elected and then taking over as presid..>> view originalShootout involving Hialeah police leaves one dead in car
A shootout involving Hialeah police and someone in another car left one person dead early Sunday in Northwest Miami-Dade. A crashed white car had more than two dozen bullet holes on the driver’s side. The Hialeah police car also was shot up. Shell casings and police markers litter the road. One person died in the white car, according to those at the scene, said Hialeah police spokesman Lt. Carl Zogby. A body was slumped inside across the passenger seat of the white car. (AP Photo/Matt Dunham) LONDON — Linebacker Lawrence Timmons made his Miami Dolphins debut on Sunday, and it’s a debut that would not have happened if the club hadn’t give him another chance. And you thought the performance at the Jets last week was bad? Bad got worse. Rock bottom got lower. The Miami Dolphins were awful offensively in Sunday's 20-0 loss to New Orleans in London -- pitifully so after an opening 81-yard drive that ended with a Jay Cutler end-zone interception that seemed to thoroughly deflate the team. The Fins' defense was OK, closer to pretty good than bad considering Drew Brees slices through everybody. But the offense? A punt-fest after that opening drive. Nothin..>> view original
